So, just how distracted are teen drivers? A new study by AAA, which caught thousands of teens talking or texting on their cell phones moments before crashing, highlights distracted driving dangers.

As part of the unique study, parents allowed AAA to mount cameras inside their cars. What was captured was jaw-dropping.

The study found that nearly six of 10 crashes involving teen drivers were preceded by distractions, including interactions with other passengers, cell phone use, grooming or looking at something other than the road ahead. Thats four times higher than previous estimates based on police reports.

Distracted driving is a danger to all those who share Oklahoma’s roadways and is one of the leading causes of fatal auto accidents. If you or someone you love has been injured in an accident caused by a distracted driver, to not hesitate to contact an experienced personal injury attorney in Tulsa to discuss filing a claim.

Distracted & Shocking Times

Some experts say the study is a sign of our addicted to technology times. But texting also poses another problem: its notoriously difficult to enforce.

Distracted driving impairs reaction time in a big way; the researchers found that teen drivers using a cell phone had their eyes off the road for an average of 4.1 out of the final 6 seconds before the crash.

What’s worse, researchers also found that the distracted teens failed to react more than half of the time before impact and crashed without braking or steering.

Experts say parents need to lead by example and put the phone down. In fact, some experts suggest placing a phone in the back seat, or some place where you know you cant reach it.
