Oklahoma State Troopers are cracking down on drivers speeding along the construction zone on I-244. According to police, they have handed out more than 137 citations and 42 warnings.
Police say that they have seen drivers traveling between 80-100 miles per hour in the 50 mile per hour construction zone.
Nearby, neighbors in one Tulsa community are concerned about drivers speeding in and around the neighborhood. The speed limit on Delaware Avenue and Pine Street is 25 miles per hour. However, those in the neighborhood say that some motorists are driving at speeds of 40 to 60 miles per hour. Many are concerned that pedestrians or pets could be injured by a speeding driver.

Speeding Accidents
Though no accidents have been reported, it is important for drivers to realize that speeding remains one of the top causes of automotive accidents.
Between 2011 and 2012, speeding-related fatalities increased by two percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Overall, speed-related fatalities accounted for one-third of all traffic fatalities in 2012.
Unfortunately, many drivers tend to mix alcohol with reckless driving. About 38 percent of drunk driving fatalities involved drivers who were also speeding.
In Oklahoma, 771 traffic fatalities in 2014 were caused by drivers who were traveling at an unsafe speed.
Though other drivers and pedestrians are usually the victims of speeding accidents, construction workers are also at risk. In 2008, the Federal Highway Administration revealed that speeding was a factor in 30 percent of work zone accident fatalities.
